Daylight Saving Time FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about when the clocks change, why we do it, and what comes next.
When is Daylight Saving Time in 2027 (daylight savings 2027)?
In 2027, Daylight Saving Time in the United States begins on Sunday, March 14, 2027, at 2:00 AM (spring forward to 3:00 AM) and ends on Sunday, November 7, 2027, at 2:00 AM (fall back to 1:00 AM).
When does daylight savings 2027 ends (fall back)?
Daylight savings 2027 ends on the first Sunday of November — November 7, 2027, at 2:00 AM local time, when clocks fall back one hour to 1:00 AM and standard time returns nationwide.
When does daylight savings time end permanently?
As of 2027, Daylight Saving Time has not ended permanently. The House passed the Sunshine Protection Act (H.R. 139) on July 14, 2026, but the Senate has not voted on it. Nineteen states have enacted laws to adopt permanent DST once Congress authorizes it, but until then the twice-yearly clock change continues.
What is the status of the Daylight Savings Bill in 2026?
On July 14, 2026, the US House passed the Sunshine Protection Act (H.R. 139) on a bipartisan 309–117 vote with President Trump's backing. The bill then moved to the Senate, where it stalled in committee — Senate Majority Leader John Thune said there was 'no clear path forward,' and no floor vote was scheduled before the November 2026 time change. The 119th Congress also considered two competing bills: the 'Sunshine for Our Kids Act' (H.R. 9638) for permanent standard time, and the 'Daylight Act of 2026' (H.R. 7378) for a 30-minute 'half-daylight saving time.' Neither left committee.
Is it 'Daylight Saving Time' or 'Daylight Savings'?
The official legal and grammatical term is 'Daylight Saving Time' (singular 'Saving'). However, 'Daylight Savings' and 'Daylight Savings Time' are the most popular conversational and search terms across the United States.
How does Daylight Saving Time work in the United States?
Under the Uniform Time Act of 1966 and the Energy Policy Act of 2005, US Daylight Saving Time runs for 34 weeks from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. Clocks move forward 1 hour in spring and backward 1 hour in fall at 2:00 AM local time.
Do all US states observe Daylight Saving Time?
No. Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii do not observe DST and stay on standard time year-round. US territories including Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the US Virgin Islands also skip it.
What is the difference between 'spring forward' and 'fall back'?
'Spring forward' refers to the March start of DST, when clocks move forward one hour and we lose an hour of sleep. 'Fall back' refers to the November end, when clocks move back one hour and we gain an hour.
What are the pros and cons of Daylight Saving Time?
The main benefits of DST are brighter, longer evenings that support outdoor activity, recreation, and a small reduction in evening electricity use. The main downsides are sleep disruption and short-term health risks around the spring transition, including temporary spikes in heart attacks and traffic accidents, plus added complexity for scheduling and time zones.
